One of the most curious areas in the city of Lyon is the neighborhood of Croix-Rousse. It is located north of the Presqu'île area between the two rivers that line the city. This area is also known as “the hill that works” since textile workers lived here during the 19th century. What surprised me most about this beautiful neighborhood of Lyon was the phenomenal metamorphosis that occurred in the old factories to become very original homes during the early twentieth century. They call it the apartments canuts.

In your visit to Lyon do not cut yourself and enter one of the buildings. They do not usually have the doors closed. The interior corridors look like labyrinths that overlook a large interior courtyard from where you can see the curious balconies of the houses.

The interiors of the houses consist of very high walls and the windows of similar size offer a great luminosity in the interior.

It is a very populated area in the city and with a very special character. Formerly it was an independent city of Lyon that was annexed in the mid-nineteenth century but today they still say among themselves that they go to Lyon when they move to the center even if they are just a few minutes walk from it.
