Alicante has always been a province identified with the beaches and the good quality of life. With the more than 300 sunny days a year we have (in addition, also free of wind) it is something totally normal. In fact, it is one of the main reasons why I stayed in my hometown after spending more than 10 years abroad.
But Alicante is not just sun and beach. It is also a mountainous province where you will find a good number of hiking trails that cover mid-mountain landscapes (between 1,000 and 2,000 meters). Mediterranean forest, terraces of crops, tiny and quiet mountain villages, diverse fauna and flora, spectacular viewpoints to the sea ... And a mountain cuisine in typical restaurants that you only get to know by word of mouth.
There are many hiking trails in Alicante, but here I bring you five of the ones I liked the most:
Sierra Helada hiking trail
The Sierra Frost It is a strangeness of nature. The reason is that it is at the foot of the sea. It is not very high - its cliffs do not measure more than 300 meters in its highest pulse - but its spectacular compensates for the shortage of height.
The Sierra Helada Natural Park is the first land maritime park in the Valencian Community and has an area of 5,600 hectares. There are several marked routes that will allow you to explore the intricacies of its coves, its fauna and its flora. Meet the beautiful lighthouse of Albir and look out at the Punta del Cavall. If you are one of those who want to feel the adrenaline flow through your body, you can always try to descend one of the ravines that die in the beautiful waters of the Mediterranean.
EXCURSIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN ALICANTE
Little time in Alicante? It may be a good idea to sign up for one of the following excursions Around the area. In all of them you will have a Spanish guideThey come with very good recommendations from other travelers:
- Free guided tour of Alicante
- Excursion to Guadalest and the Fuentes del Aglar
- Paddle surf tour of Playa de San Juan
- Kayak tour of Cabo de las Huertas
- Excursion to Elche and Santa Pola
- More excursions around Alicante and surroundings
But nevertheless, The best hiking route in Sierra Helada is the one that leads from one end to the other (Yellow Route). Of course, it is not circular and it will take about 4 hours to get from Albir to Benidorm The difficulty is medium-high and you will not have water sources all the way, then you will have to go loaded with enough bottles. The views that you can enjoy during much of the tour will compensate for fatigue. Remember that if you do not have someone to pick you up, you will have to take some transport that will return you to the starting point.
Hiking trail through the Maigmó
The ascent to the peak of Maigmo, for its north face, it is one of the best mountain routes in Alicante. If you do not fancy so much emotion, do not worry, its southern face is much simpler and also leads to the top.
The ridges of the Sierra del Maigmó can be seen from the fields of the vast Vinalopó valley. Its highest peak is close to 1,300 meters above sea level and the set of mountains forms the Natural Site of the Maigmó Massif, which in turn is included in the Serra del Maigmó and Serra del Sit Protected Landscape.
